Doug Harvey

Douglas Norman Harvey, known as Doug Harvey, (born December 19, 1924, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada – died December 26, 1989, in Montreal) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player.

He began playing ice hockey as a junior in his hometown of Montreal. He made his debut in the National Hockey League during the 1946-1947 season with the Montreal Canadiens. After a first season of 35 games, his play continued to improve over the seasons to the point of being considered one of the best defensemen in the league in 1950-1951; he was then elected to the season's all-star team. At a time when defensemen did not have an offensive role, Harvey was recognized for his passing and scoring talents. As the Montreal Canadiens dynasty took root during the 1950s, Doug Harvey received several awards, including seven James Norris Trophies as the league's best defenseman. He led the Canadiens to six Stanley Cups in 10 years. With Maurice Richard's retirement, Harvey was named captain of the team in 1960-1961. But the following season, he was traded to the New York Rangers.
